New Canadian Author | John Hartig
Canadian authors, like all authors, work hard at their craft. And like any author knows, it's not easy to become famous, let alone make a good living at it. Getting known is difficult for less established authors, since agents seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur, and a whole galaxy of new authors have popped up, self-published, and social media savvy.
Jim Croce [for those of us who remember him] used to sing a song, "I've got a name." Earning one is difficult for a new author, but even more difficult for one who is not only new but also older.
My name is John Hartig. I won't tell you my age, but suffice it to say that I've passed some light years beyond retirement. I'm too old to go after fame, nor fortune, but I feel an inner need to write. How good is it? Who cares! I just like writing. I'm on my third novel as of this date, hopefully coming out the summer of 2018. I also write short stories and yes, even poetry. Although I used to think there was no sense in writing poetry unless you could sing, so you could put your poetic words into a song, maybe a more marketable commodity. Well, I can't sing, but occasionally, a poetic thought does cross my mind which needs putting down. Funny, I was going to say, putting down on paper. But that expression seems to be obsolete. It's good to see that Captain Picard of the Starship Enterprise occasionally chooses to leaf through an actual book, instead of reading from a tablet.
Well, I'm a new Canadian "old" author. I invite you to surf through my website. You can always bookmark me for a later perusal, maybe when you've got more time and a cup of coffee. I love Canada for all its diversity, from Newfoundland, through La Belle Province, through Ontario and the Prairies, and finally over the mountains into British Columbia. I'm glad my family moved here from Austria, so in a sense I'm not only a new Canadian author but also a new Canadian. I hope I've learned enough of the English language for you to enjoy my writings. My hero is Joseph Conrad, not Austrian, but Polish, who learned English at the age of 20, and he did not do too badly.
By the way, when I stare at a blank screen and nothing comes to mind, then I veer off to my other creative outlets. I'm a Canadian scenery photographer, focusing mainly on the Niagara Region. Finally, I'm a Web Designer, a skill I learned in night school at Mohawk College. It's actually handy being able to do all three things, write, photograph and web design. Oh yes, when I have time, I also do some housework so my wife lets me write...a fair trade-off.
Meanwhile, sit back, relax and let me tell you a story...
